In Spring this year (2023) I took a chance on doing something that many believe is just reserved for younger people. The prospect of three weeks traveling across Europe by train often conjures up the image of the penniless student, sleeping on overnight services, laden with a heavy backpack and looking for all the world that they’d just like a nice cup of team from their mum.

But InterRailing (or to be more precise, Eurailing) is increasingly being embraced by people of all ages. And my experience earlier in the year provided inspiration to do more of it – though perhaps not for three weeks at a time.
This journey will take me from my home city of Nottingham across to France, onto Italy and Austria, before crossing Germany and heading back towards home. Along with the real time blogs, I’ll also be embarking on a new journey into podcasting – though you won’t hear those results until later on.
For this trip, I’ve bought a global pass that gives me five days of travel across the space of a month. It’s cheaper than a continuous pass but just as versatile – meaning I can use just about any train I like in over 30 countries. The downside is that I can only travel on five days. This means more limited options of just how far I can get, and less flexibility if my plans change. At 2023 prices, the pass has cost just under €300, though for my trip I’ve opted for First Class.
It’s time to get on board…
